What a sound bath is

A guided hour of deep rest, led by sound.

A sound bath is a guided session in which you rest on a mat while singing bowls, gongs and chimes are played around the room. There is no chanting, no movement, no posture to hold and nothing to prepare in advance.

The effect is largely physical. Low, sustained tones travel through the floor and the body as well as the ears. Breathing slows, muscle tension eases, and most people lose track of time during the session.

People attend for help with sleep, for relief from stress or a busy mind, or simply for an uninterrupted hour of rest.

The session, in order

What the hour involves.

01

Arrive and set up

Doors open shortly before the start time. Choose a spot, lay out your mat, blanket and cushion, and make yourself comfortable and warm.

02

The session opens

The lights are lowered and the room is brought to a settled state with a few minutes of guided breathing before the instruments begin.

03

The sound bath

Singing bowls, gongs and chimes are played continuously, without breaks between instruments. You remain resting on your mat throughout.

04

Close and return

The sound fades gradually rather than stopping abruptly. A few minutes of silence follow, then the lights come up. Take your time before getting up.

Bring: a yoga mat or similar, a blanket, a pillow or cushion, warm layers and water. Body temperature drops while lying still for an hour, so bring more warmth than you would normally need.

Who leads the session

Clinton Oliver, sound bath practitioner.

Clinton's background is in music before wellness. Years of DJ work shaped how he plays: the instruments are layered and mixed continuously, without the pauses between bowls common in other sessions, so the sound holds steady for the full hour.

Personal training and Pilates inform the rest — an understanding of how the body releases tension, and how long that takes.

Steve Foxton

If you've never tried a soundbath before, try this one and if you do know about soundbaths you really need this one. This is no ordinary soundbath, this is a continuous, rhythmic blending of singing bowls that doesn't stop, pause or falter whilst enveloping you in the vibrations. Clinton applies his background in movement, music and as a DJ to blend a unique, deeply resonating experience that leaves you refreshed, invigorated and ready to take on your world feeling healed. So pause, relax and let the sound take over. This is not to be missed.

Before you come

The questions people actually ask.

What is a sound bath?

+

A guided session in which you rest on a mat while singing bowls, gongs and chimes are played around the room. There is no chanting, no movement and no posture to hold. Most people describe the experience as deep rest.

Is sound meditation the same thing as a sound bath?

+

Yes. Both names describe the same session — "sound meditation" refers to the practice, "sound bath" to the experience of being surrounded by sound. If you searched for one and found the other, this is the right page.

Where is it, and how far is that from Market Harborough?

+

Kibworth Village Hall, 15 Station Street, Kibworth Beauchamp, Leicester LE8 0LN. That's roughly six miles up the A6 from Market Harborough — about a fifteen-minute drive.

How long does a sound bath last?

+

1 hour. Please arrive a few minutes before the start time so you can set up your mat and settle before the session begins.

Do I need any experience with meditation?

+

No. The session is guided throughout and requires nothing from you beyond resting quietly. Many people attending have never meditated before. A wandering mind is normal and does not reduce the benefit.

What should I bring and what should I wear?

+

Wear comfortable, warm clothing — body temperature drops while lying still. Bring a yoga mat or similar, a blanket, a pillow or cushion, and an eye mask if you prefer darkness. Water is useful for afterwards.

What if I fall asleep?

+

Falling asleep during a sound bath is common and entirely fine. The sound continues to have an effect, and you will not be disturbed.

How do I book a space?

+

Complete the booking form on this page and Clinton will confirm your place. Sessions are limited to 20 people so that everyone has adequate floor space, and they can fill up in advance.

Do I have to pay when I book?

+

No. Booking reserves your space at no cost. Payment is £20 per person in cash on the night. If your plans change, please let Clinton know so the space can be offered to someone else.

Is there anything I should mention beforehand?

+

Please mention it when you book if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or other implanted device, have epilepsy, have a recent injury, or are sensitive to sound. This rarely prevents you taking part — it allows Clinton to set the room up appropriately.

Can you run a sound bath for my group or at my venue?

+

Yes. Private groups, workplaces, retreats and festivals make up a large part of the work. Send an enquiry with details of the space and the number of people.
